The History
Tea clothing was popular in the eighteenth century among the socialites in the United Kingdom, typically worn by women for the “high tea,” a tradition started by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Stanhope. Since lunch was commonly served at noon and dinner is at eight or nine o’clock, in between lunch and dinner, women would usually crave for sweets and calories, thus the birth of the traditional high tea. Afternoon tea is usually served in the lawn, just right for the summery environment.
Tea clothes are considered the most feminine and elegant garments that can bring women from work directly to a party with just a minimal change in accessories and shoes. That is why they are called a “safe” dress because it can fit all occasions and other than that, it can also be worn by any type of women. From teenage girls to older women, tea clothes can flatter just about any figure.
Flowery and Feminine?
Definitely tea clothing is not exclusively for women only, not anymore, up until the twentieth century. It is true that generally tea dresses are lingering and girly that looks comfortable when going to attend a garden party or a high tea, but now there are tea baby clothing and tea kids clothing available. They can still be flowery and are still chic and demure but no longer in a feminine way. Tea clothes are no longer worn for an afternoon tea only or for summer season or for high-society ladies.
